A Spotlight on Ebony Cameras

Customers often come to us saying that they want to buy a large format camera... although it's a big question we do our best to help. Customers requirements are often diverse but usually go something like this ...it must be light, but solid, rigid but flexible, capable of using the shortest lenses available and the longest but without changing the bellows, and small but not fiddly, among other things! In short everyone wants the ideal camera. Hopefully it will never be invented or life will become very dull but we decided to try and come up with something that would keep the majority of the enquirers happy. Often people want to move up to large format to achieve better results with landscape and architectural photography so this was our starting point. We have been dealing with Ebony cameras company for some years and recently our collaboration produced the RW45 with great success.

Following this success we have come up with the RSW45, arguably the best thought out landscape/architectural camera on the market and exclusive to Robert White. By stripping down to the basic view camera functions the RSW45 is compact, lightweight, quick to set up and rigid in that way that only Ebony's can be. Rigidity is an often overlooked feature that is absolutely crucial to obtaining the best performance from modern wide angle lenses with their minuscule depth of focus at the film plane, and the RSW45's non folding design addresses this issue. Front rise and axis tilt movements give you the control you need over your image in the majority of situations. Much can be achieved with front rise and front axis tilt. Other movements can also be improvised but our experience has shown that in situations for which this camera was conceived they are unnecessary.

The new Schneider 38mm XL is the ideal short lens for this camera. The Rodenstock 35 Apo-G can also be used of course but we consider that the Schneider has the edge. As the camera is supplied, the RSW will take up to a 180mm lens, adding the 35mm extension panel take means that a 210mm is no problem and we've even had an old 360 Tele Xenar on there, and all with one set of bellows! Add the 452 extension back this adds a further 60-90mm of extension for closer focusing or longer Tele lenses. The RSW45 is also equipped with the tried and tested Ebony international back, so roll film use is very straight forward. Hopefully from this you can see why we have invested time thought & resources in this camera and understand that the simplicity of the RSW is by no means limiting... but liberating.

RSW45
The Ebony RSW45 Camera

The RSW is the latest addition to the Ebony SW family, it has been specially made for us after requests from our customers for the easiest to use 5x4" landscape camera. It has been developed from the 'Don't be Limited be Liberated' premise; using the same bed and standards as the 45 SW but features only the movements absolutely necessary for Landscape photography:

Front Rise/Fall
Front Axis tilt

As with the other "SW" cameras in the range, it works "straight out of the bag", as has a non-folding body and is neat, rigid and very strong. Again, the RSW will accept lenses as short as 35mm (on sunk panel) and has a standard "International" back .

More information on the RSW45 is available on the Robert White web site.
