Very Large Format Enlarging and Printing
B&W Direct Enlargements:
8x10, 11x14, 8x20, 10x20, and 12x20.

Tom Yanul is an established very large format photographer working with a 12" x 20" banquet camera and the amazing Yanulpan delineator swing-lens pan cameras.

Tom Yanul Labs is an Associate of f32 Large Format Photography. This means that all registered f32 Large Format Photographers can obtain a discount on the enlarging services of 15% until July 2002! After July this reduces to 10%.

Tom has an impressive 1200 Square Feet of space in his Laboratory and some very special equipment of his own design used to create some wonderful prints.

The Laboratory is located in a South West suburb of Chicago, USA. It was built to make direct enlargements from 8x10 to 12x20' black & white negatives.

Reasons for this Lab:

As a one-man operation I am opening my lab to outside work for two reasons; I need help covering operating expenses, which are considerable for a 1200sq. Foot space. But also because I know first hand the difficulties of trying to find a lab offering direct enlargement of very large format negs. After many years of frustration and using 8x10 copies of my prints to make enlargements, I finally bought a space to create a lab to handle my own very large negs.

The Enlarger:

The heart of the lab is the enlarger I built which has a 2000/4000w pulsed xenon light source. Negatives are well protected with several sheets of heat absorbing glass. Further protection is provided by a highly focused light reflector system which gives very short exposure times - average negs at a 2x enlargement of about 3-5 seconds, at f:22-32.

Other particulars:

The lab is offering enlargements within certain parameters; it is very custom in a sense in that I do all the work from start to finish. I make all the contact with clients, I make the prints, do the developing, and everything else involved from a to b. I can communicate by telephone and computer to resolve any issues or needs at real time with the clients.

Materials:

After several years of working with my own negs I have standardized on one paper - Ilford Multigrade III in a pearl surface. Although not quite as razor sharp as a glossy surface might provide, the fact that you are working very large limits the degree of burning and dodging that can be done and the forgiving nature of a pearl surface allows for better control of bright, contrasty areas. Burning and dodging is still done, but not to a pinpoint degree.

Sizes of enlargements:
Until I get a good working relationship with clients I am limiting my offering to a 2x enlargment as a maximum from the larger 20" long negs - 8x20 to 12x20. This would mean a roughly 16x40 to 24x40 inch print. For myself it isn't worth the trouble to enlarge unless you get to the doubling of the original size neg. Plus, I want to get to know the clients work and likewise, they should be comfortable with mine. As time progreses I will offer larger prints, but for now it is in your best interest to work this size until we are all comfortable with each others work.

Price:

to keep things as simple as possible I am offering one price for the 40" wide prints, regardless of it being 8x20 or 12x20 neg. The time is really the same, and a few inches of extra paper make no difference. Its actually more work to change settings to handle 11x14 negs but for now prices for these will remain the same for a somewhat larger than 2x print to give a 40" print on the long side.

First print: $69. Additional at time of first print: $39.

Special until July of 2002: two prints will be done for one price. As an introductory offer for first-time clients you will receive two 40" prints for the first print price of $69.

Shipping and Handling:

It is up to the client to provide a clean negative. Garbage in - garbage out. My job is to make fine enlargements, not to wash up after sloppy darkroom work by others. Shipping and handling costs are for my costs only - I do not add handling charges for wrapping and mailing etc. Prints will be returned in substantial boxes or tubes - such as priority mails large triangle box. Only the exact cost of shipping is charged the client. Negatives can be returned seperately or with the print - clients choice.

Turnaround:

Should be a few days provided there are no unusual circumstances. Consultation with the clients is essential. If clear instructions are received with the negative or prior to sending material in, then confirmation will be made, preferably by computer, or by phone that I understand the situation once I actually see the neg. This is really a custom operation, and I will do all that I can, reasonably, to fulfill the client's wishes.

I would assume that anyone shooting very large format cameras has a great concern - along with a professional understanding of what can be done in the darkroom.
