thanks Vic, for he further info.  I think Jeff cleared it up yesterday.
Ansel Adams was a master in and out of the darkroom.  I will never be his
caliber of a printer.  I am just glad to clear the question up.  So the
conclusion is that he intensified the foreground of the negative and did a
lot of manipulation and that gave us the incredible print we have today.

btw there is a little shop off the main square in Sante Fe, New Mexico that
has original images of all the great masters for sale.  They are right
there in fron of your eyes (You can reach out and touch them...but please
don't). All the gang is there from Henri Carier Bresson to Ansel.  I was
pretty amazed.
