Hi-

Why not use a slide projector as a light source used at a distance which
focuses the image size to that of your  negative.  With a 35mm projector the
distance for a 4X5 is only a foot or 2 so you should be able to use a
cardboard box with cut outs between the projector lens and the negative to
minimize stray light.  The projector bulb is a fair "white light" source and
is cooled.
