Pam I had a studio in Chicago for 15 years and it is very common in 
large studios to put filter gels and such behind the lens to filter 
for color correction.  Sinar even has convenient clamps on some of 
their shutters that fit behind the lenses to hold filters.  I confess 
being forced to use some cc filters that were scratched badly.  These 
faults never showed up on the film (8x10) ever.  Of course I through 
them away as soon as I replaced them with new filters, but it was 
interesting that the faults did not show up on film.

I don't think it makes a difference on which end you put them....at 
least not in the studio.
