Hah :-)  That made me grin, particularly as it will be a hire car :-)

Probably better not to upset the nice people at the car hire place by
telling them where they can find the rest of the car when I return the
battered remains.....

OK, sounds as though the Valley of the Gods is off the list.  Are there any
areas which are OK for a normal car or will I need a guide in Monument
Valley as the alternative....

Finding 4WD hire cars is surprisingly difficult in Vegas - tried that a
couple of years ago. Those that are available are in the same category as
modern LF glass in copal shutters  - objects of desire but out of reach :-)
