Yeah....most photographers just tape the filter to the back element. 
I made a nifty little filter holder for 4 inch cc filters that 
consited of two filter holders.  One was permanently attached to the 
back of the lens board on little legs, the other held the filter and 
slid in an out.  This kept the gels from getting damaged from tape.

In Chicago we went through a lot of filters and sometimes we were 
forced to use bad ones when nothing else was available, but honestly, 
it never made a difference although we all winced doing it.
