I use the Fujinon A, 360mm, f:10 lens.  Even though it is f:10, it gives a
bright and contrasty image.  It is an APO lens.  It has excellent coverage
(500+mm will just cover 11x14).  It weighs under 2 pounds, and optically
performs extremely well.  Probably one of the best lens purchases I've ever
made.  I can't think of any reason I'd want to trade, other than speed, but
these are occasionally on ebay.

I handled a Phillips Expedition one time, and have always lusted after it.
Kind of a unique clamshell design, with some composite materials involved
(it's been a few years). So far as affordable, I don't think it was
particularly so.

I happen to know Keith Canham, and his products are excellent, and built
pretty light.  Again, affordability.
