Well, let's see: I have my multifocals for general use. I had a special
pair of trifocals made for use in the office, i.e., to read, and to see the
monitor, and also to see someone coming into my office.
I opted not to have a third pair, just for photography! Building the
viewer was easier. I also didn't want to have to change glasses under the
focus cloth and out from under the focus cloth.
The issue for me is not screen brightness which a fresnel lens will cure.
It's simply my inability to focus. For example, I can still use an 8x10 or
bigger camera without aid ...
The viewer was calculated to put the image at about 1 meter or so -- a
perfect viewing distance for me. And my chosen magnification makes the
image's appearance perfectly natural. There is no eyestrain. With respect
to my eyesight, the process of focusing the 4x5 is now no more difficult for
me than for a good 35mm slr or a 6x6 slr -- though I do find the autofocus
in my F90 will generally focus it more accurately than I can manually.
The viewer also has the advantage of being binocular, so, unlike the 35 or
the 6x6, I don't have to look through the "top inside corner" of the
spectacle's lens -- which is a difficult problem, in terms of spherical
abberation, when wearing multifocals.
