Simply click on the picture of the book to be taken to the ordering page.

The Camera (Ansel Adams Photography, Book 1) by Ansel Adams, Robert Baker (Contributor)

"The Camera, together with The Negative and The Print, comprise The Ansel Adams Photography Series, a legendary triad of books about photographic technique that has become the most influential "how-to" series on photography ever written.

The first edition of this series was completed in the 1950s. Adams completely revised and updated it just a few years before his death, making it his last word on the technical mastery of his medium. Three generations of photographers have learned how to approach the artistic possibilities of their art form through this seminal series.

The Camera covers 35 mm, medium format, and large-format view cameras and offers detailed advice on camera components such as lenses, shutters, and light meters. Adams' concepts of "visualization" and "image management" are the philosophical cornerstones of the book. Extensively illustrated with photographs by Adams as well as instructive line drawings, this classic manual belongs on every serious photographer's bookshelf."

18. The Negative (Ansel Adams Photography, Book 2) by Ansel Adams, Robert Baker (Contributor)
Simply click on the picture of the book to be taken to the ordering page.

The Negative (Ansel Adams Photography, Book 2) by Ansel Adams, Robert Baker (Contributor)

"Written in an accessible style, this book forms part of the Adams trilogy, Camera, Negative, and Print. In terms of the zone system this book forms part of another trilogy of the book by Johnson above and Davis below.

The book is excellent at describing the process of pre-visualisation of images in terms of the zone system. Experienced photographers will find the book useful, however those new to the zone system are recommended to look at Johnson's book first.

Even if you feel constrained by the idea of the zone system, an understanding will allow you freedom in making the images in your mind's eye. Adams book will help your photographic practice." Clive Warren 2000.

19. The Print (Ansel Adams Photography, Book 3) by Ansel Adams, Robert Baker (Contributor)
Simply click on the picture of the book to be taken to the ordering page.

The Print (Ansel Adams Photography, Book 3) by Ansel Adams, Robert Baker (Contributor)

"The Print is the third and final book in The Ansel Adams Photography Series - the seminal guides fully revised by Ansel Adams shortly before his death in 1984.

The book covers the entire printmaking process, from designing and furnishing a darkroom and experimenting with your first print, to mastering advanced techniques such as developer modifications, toning, and bleaching, and burning and dodging. This thorough guide is filled with indispensable darkroom techniques and tips, and amply illustrated with photographs and technical drawings. It is an indispensable tool for mastering the complex art of photographic printmaking.

The issues adressed include: cropping; contrast control; and presentation. These are core skills needed for any presentation of photographic work whether mediated through traditional silver or silicon technology using a computer, image manipulation software and a printer." Clive Warren 2000.

20. Ansel Adams at 100 by John Szarkowski, Ansel Adams, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
Simply click on the picture of the book to be taken to the ordering page.

Ansel Adams at 100 by John Szarkowski, Ansel Adams, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

"Ansel Adams at 100 celebrates the centenary of one of America's best-loved photographers. This superlative catalog of an exhibition organized by San Francisco Museum of Modern Art presents the most dramatic and the most delicate of Adams's formal compositions, from spectacular mountainscapes to grasses on a pond, all reflecting his avowedly religious relationship to nature. Previously unpublished examples of Adams's early images show how he worked through the day, using changing light and different vantage points to interpret a subject.

A fascinating comparison of his darkroom techniques is given in two printings of a 1948 negative of Mount McKinley, made in 1949 and 1978 to very different effects, one brooding and luminous, the other crisp and monumental. The text by John Szarkowski, gives biographical details and gracefully places Adams in the history of 20th-century photography and the conservation movement. Impeccable technical standards were a hallmark of Adams's work, and this book follows his tradition..

Each black-and-white image is a tritone, meaning that it was printed from three different plates corresponding to different parts of the original photograph's gray scale, resulting in an extremely rich chromatic range. Light really does appear to glisten off a wet rock, and white aspens to glow. The images have been very carefully chosen, each page of a double spread complementing the other. The book's paper is custom-made, it is bound in linen and presented in a linen slipcase, and a complimentary facsimile of one of Adams's icons is included. The book consciously sets out to be the definitive study of a master, and it succeeds." John Stevenson 2002.

21. Beyond the Zone System by Phil Davis
Simply click on the picture of the book to be taken to the ordering page.

Beyond the Zone System by Phil Davis

"This is the fourth edition of Beyond the Zone System. The book makes the science of photographic sensitometry both accessible and useful to interested photographers, bridging the gap between theory and practice in a way that promotes a true partnership of science and art.

The book is intended primarily for photographers who use large-format cameras and black-and-white sheet film, but the basic information about how the B&W photographic materials and processes work will be useful to users of any B&W film format.

The book will make a useful addition to the Johnson and Adams books reviewed above and perhaps broaden understanding as to how the zone system fits in as part of advanced photographic practice..... " Clive Warren 2000.

22. Post Exposure: Advanced Techniques for the Photographic Printer by Ctein
Simply click on the picture of the book to be taken to the ordering page.

Post Exposure: Advanced Techniques for the Photographic Printer by Ctein

"A practical guide to the refinements of color and black and white photographic printmaking. Look eleswhere if you want an introductory text! The first two of the 15 chapters address how we see and how the film sees. The rest of the book covers technical issues including calibration, enlarging, contrast control, fiber versus resin-coated black and white paper, film characteristics and calibration, enlarging lenses, image sharpness, and many other items of useful information gleaned from years of experience and experimentation. Numerous illustrations and 16 pages of full color provide clear examples of practical techniques.

There is clear explanation of the principles of printing from a master photographer and expert printmaker. Post-Exposure will teach photographers the underlying principles as well as practices needed to produce truly excellent photographic prints. Derived from over thirty years experience and addressing both black-and-white and color, its purpose is to teach photographers the refinements of the printing process.

There are many tables of information and technical discussion about what really matters and what does not, in addition to tables recommending enlarging lenses with respect to their characteristics. There is also excellent treatment on the effect of various filters on different papers. Ctein presents facts for the most part, but on occasion also states his opinions. This is an excellent book and full of very useful information that will improve your printing practice." Clive Warren 2001.

Chaos
by Josef Koudelka, Robert Delpire, Bernard Noel

"Published to coincide with an exhibition of Josef Koudelka's work, this volume presents the photographs he has taken using a panoramic large format camera over a 12 year period.

The photos are beautifully reproduced and many are abstract in nature. Shows the real potential of panoramic formats in the hands of a master.

The book is on my Christmas list so am keeping my fingers crossed." Clive Warren 2000

24. Edward Weston : 1886-1958 (Photo Book Series) by Edward Weston, Terence Pitts, Ansel Adams, Manfred Heiting
Simply click on the picture of the book to be taken to the ordering page.

Edward Weston : 1886-1958 (Photo Book Series) by Edward Weston, Terence Pitts, Ansel Adams, Manfred Heiting

"In 1902, the year Edward Weston was given his first camera, few people regarded photography as more than a craft. But along with innovators like Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Steichen, Weston revolutionized the ways photographers chose subject material and used photographic techniques to create what gradually came to be accepted as fine art.

In this book you will find 180 of Weston's finest images, including many, such as the pines of Point Lobos, the sand dunes of Oceano, and his stark, unadorned nudes, that have become icons.

I am a great admirer of Weston who was one of the real innovators in photography and highly recommend this book. There are some stunning photos and the repro. quality is superb. " Clive Warren 2000

25. Portraits by Edward Weston (Photographer), Cole Weston (Photographer), Susan Morgan
Simply click on the picture of the book to be taken to the ordering page.

Portraits by Edward Weston (Photographer), Cole Weston (Photographer), Susan Morgan

"From light-control to master-printing, Weston meticulously glorified on film nautilus shells, green peppers and household implements. Less famous but still impressive in a selection gathered here for the first time are the portraits that made up most of his life's work.

Quietly catching on large-format film his models' characters, Weston in the 1920s and '30s expanded existing norms of background and composition in portraying such personalities as D.H. Lawrence, Diego Rivera, Robinson Jeffers, Jo Davidson, Henry Fonda and Ansel Adams, along with his own sons and various friends and associates. Included are several nudes of his protegee, model and lover, Tina Modotti, as well as some of his second wife, Charis Wilson.

I am a great admirer of Weston and the f64 group which he co-founded. Here is an opportunity to appreciate some of the work that gave Weston his much deserved reputation." Clive Warren 2001

26. Edward Weston: Forms of Passion by Gilles Mora (Editor), Terence Pitts (Contributor), Alan Trachtenberg
Simply click on the picture of the book to be taken to the ordering page.

Edward Weston: Forms of Passion by Gilles Mora (Editor), Terence Pitts (Contributor), Alan Trachtenberg

"Edward Weston's (1886-1958) large body of straightforward, elegant black-and-white photographs concentrate on natural forms: the human figure; seashells; plants and vegetables; and landscapes. This volume features more than 300 duotone reproductions of Weston's work.

Anyone curious about Weston or wanting to own a representative selection of his work should buy this book. This IS Weston. Rather than a few selected prints on a single theme, this is a wide representation of the best of Weston's work. Weston had a very individual vision and this is apparent in all the photographs in this book. He perceived passion in everything he photographed and this translates through his photographs to the viewer. Weston shows us that there is energy, art and passion in everything around us.

Weston's interest in form, shape and shadow resulted in stunning photographs. He was unique at the time in his visions of mirrored form in the natural world and the corollaries with the human form. This is a book that you will come back to time after time and allows a glimpse of insight into the man who was Weston." Clive Warren 2001

Man Ray: 1890-1976 by Kate Ware, E. De L'Ecotais, Katherine Ware, Manfred Heiting (Editor), Man Ray

"What is so interesting about the artist Man Ray is how relevant his multimedia works seem to us today. Man Ray, who was born in Brooklyn, New York, and moved to Paris in 1921, was a photographer, filmmaker, painter, and writer who quickly became one of the most celebrated figures associated with the Surrealist movement.

With more than 300 gorgeously reproduced duotones of his photographs, collages, drawings, objects, and a variety of graphic work, this is the quintessential book on the intriguing artist, presenting a unique overview of his entire body of work. Most compelling are his portraits of figures who embody the spirit of the artistic vanguard of their generation: Andrˇ Breton, Yves Tanguy, Jean Cocteau, Salvador Dal’, and Gertrude Stein, as well as his innovative fashion spreads for Vanity Fair, Vogue, and Harper's Bazaar.

The essays in this volume as reproduced in English, German, and French. They provide the technical background on the influences on and methods used in Man Ray's work." Clive Warren 2001

28. Examples: The Making of 40 Photographs by Ansel Adams

Examples: The Making of 40 Photographs by Ansel Adams

"Adams presents 40 of his best known photographs accompanied by a wonderful narrative that explores the technical and aesthetic problems presented by the subjects. Insights into the personal aspects of the photographs are given through reminiscences of the places and people involved.

Adams said "The negative is the score and the print is the performance." This book explains the background to the photographs as well as the way that luck sometimes played a part in his inspirational images.

The book will inspire you to follow Adams by venturing into the wilderness with your camera and will influence the way you capture the natural world. This book is a must have for any photographers' library." Clive Warren 2000

29. Henry Hobson Richardson: A Genius for Architecture by Margaret Henderson Floyd, Paul Rocheleau

Henry Hobson Richardson: A Genius for Architecture by Margaret Henderson Floyd, Paul Rocheleau

"This is a superbly illustrated book and a great refrence source for anyone interested in American architecture and artistic approaches to its interpretation through the medium of photography. The quality of the images are outstanding as is the text. The book describes Richardson's complete artistic career and his numerous buildings in New England, Chicago, and throughout the U.S.

Richardson revived Romanesque architecture and opened the pathway towards modernism. His buildings will delight you and the photographic approaches taken to depicting them are mostly carried out by the excellent arcitectural photographer Paul Rocheleau.

There are 272 pages in this hardcover book and anyone wanting to buy a present for the photographer in their life will make them very happy with this choice." Clive Warren 2001

30. Imogen Cunningham: On the Body by Imogen Cunningham (Photographer), Richard Lorenz
Simply click on the picture of the book to be taken to the ordering page.

Imogen Cunningham: On the Body by Imogen Cunningham (Photographer), Richard Lorenz

"Imogen Cunningham was born in 1883 and at the age of 23 in 1906, shoot a nude self-portrait in which "the smooth skin of her shoulders, derri¸re, and legs glows within the darker context" of the meadow where she is laying. This is a straight photograph, but the image transforms her into a "floating arcadian Venus," as author Richard Lorenz describes the image.

Most of Cunningham's photographs show that she was highly expert in the technical aspects of photography with pin sharp images and beatiful gradations of tone. This was at a time when strict discipline would have been required given the state of the technology. It is in her interpretation of the human form where most will find great delights and probably inspiration too. She was a woman far ahead of her time and not subject to the narrow boundaries of acceptability of her own time.

This is Lorenz's fourth book of carefully selected Cunningham photographs. Lorenz quotes a last snippet of Cunningham's writing, found among her papers after she died, at 94: "For it is in this inadequate flesh that each of us must serve his dream, and so, must fail in the dream's service." Even into her 90s, Cunningham continued to create uncommonly frank, deeply humane works of genius." Clive Warren 2001

31. Karsh: A Sixty-Year Retrospective by Yousuf Karsh
Simply click on the picture of the book to be taken to the ordering page.

Karsh: A Sixty-Year Retrospective by Yousuf Karsh

"This revised and updated portfolio includes nearly 200 images by the master portrait photographer. The best known faces of our time have been memorably "Karshed" - a beaming Khruschev peeking out from a massive fur coat, a serene Helen Keller reading a book of Braille with quiet delight, a pensive Tennessee Williams at his typewriter, an impish Margaret O'Brien yanking at her pigtails. Karsh's portraits of fellow artists, especially sculptors and architects, are among his most sensitive and intuitive.

Most of the portraits in the book are in black and white and capture rare insights of some of the most influential people in the arts, politics, academics and entertainment. The reproduction is excellent with most of the photographs using the full page. One of the most famous of his portraits included is of Winston Churchill, Karsh having just snatched Churchill's cigar from his mouth which heightened his scowl and gave the world the epitomy of the British bulldog determination in 1941.

Many of Karsh's subjects were world leaders. He photographed 12 American presidents, as well as artists and other public figures, including Albert Einstein, Ernest Hemingway, and film stars including Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot and Humphrey Bogart. "My personal interest in ordinary people is unlimited, but I am fascinated by the challenge of portraying true greatness adequately with my camera," he wrote in a 1996 essay." Clive Warren 2001

32. Large Format Nature Photography by Jack W. Dykinga
Simply click on the picture of the book to be taken to the ordering page.

Large Format Nature Photography by Jack W. Dykinga

"Jack Dykinga is a well respected Pulitzer Prize-winning author and nature photographer who has worked closely with the Friends of the Arizona Highway. The book is illustrated with many colour photographs of Dykinga's work. The book presents Dykinga's individual views about using view cameras in the field. He has fairly strong opinions about suitable focal lengths based on his wealth of experience as a photojournalist.

There are useful tips and advice about how to mark equipment to make life a little easier in the field. For example, he has detailed markings to indicate exposure corrections for bellows extensions along the camera rail. He has also marked his lens boards with the amount of rise and fall available with the coverage of the lens. Some people may prefer a more relaxed approach to their large format photography, however his methods do work and are probably effective when there is already enough to think about when composing in the field.

The book is not a technical guide to large format photography nor camera selection, however there are few books specifically on the subject of large format photography and this is much more enjoyable to read than a textbook. This is a good addition to your library on large format photography and will probably help in your field preparation and practice." Clive Warren 2001

33. The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes by Christopher James
Simply click on the picture of the book to be taken to the ordering page.

The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes by Christopher James

"Christopher James is a photographer and former Harvard University professor. His book is THE definitive reference for alternative photographic processes. The book addresses use of materials and chemicals and suggests a variety of ways to make negatives and prepare the printing paper, empowering you with the understanding necessary to have a truly free approach to the development of your photographic expertise and process. "

Seven useful appendices deal with such topics as safety considerations and resources on the Web. The illustrations include a wide assortment of contemporary prints - among them some of James's own inventive images - as well as work by 19th and early 20th century photographers who pioneered most of the techniques that are now considered alternative.

From Ambrotype to Ziatype, Christopher covers the range of processes in a conversational and accessible style. Anyone interested in photography will enjoy this book, even darkroom phobics, as part of the fun lies in the sharing of a wide range of world knowledge ranging from the mysteries of 3-D to Charles Babbage's steam-driven punch-card systems. Expect a sense of humour and a refreshingly open attitude - "In gum printing," he writes, "there are very few absolutely correct ways to do anything." Clive Warren 2001

Primitive Photography : A Guide to Making Cameras, Lenses, and Calotypes by Alan Greene

"This book may well inspire you to rush off and try out some of the traditional photographic processes described inside, maybe even make your own lens! It is well illustrated with over 135 B&W and color illustrations and has suggested reading lists plus sources for supplies, and safety tips.

Primitive Photography combines the simplicity of pinhole photography, the handmade quality of alternative processes, and the precision of large-format. For those seeking alternatives to commercially prepared material as well as digital photography, it provides the instructions for creating the entire photographic process from the ground up. Given its scope and treatment of the photographic process as a whole, this may be the first book of its kind to appear in over a century.

Find out inside how to make box-cameras, lenses, paper negatives and salt prints, using inexpensive tools and materials found in most hardware and art-supply stores. Step-by-step procedures are presented alongside theoretical explanations and historical background. Streamlined calotype procedures are demonstrated, featuring different paper negative processes and the sometimes overlooked developing-out printing methods which make the book a unique reference source." Clive Warren 2002
